Types of Abuse
There are many different types of abuse. Its purpose is to control, dominate or hurt an intimate partner through a pattern of controlling behavior that could include:
Emotional Abuse
- name-calling
- jealousy
- stalking
Verbal Abuse
- yelling or screaming
- put downs
Cultural Abuse
- using culture to excuse abusive behavior
- putting down your culture
Physical/Threat of Physical Abuse
- threatening looks
- driving dangerously
- throwing things at you or near you
- restraining you
Sexual Abuse
- having an affair
- forced sex
- being critical of how you look or dress
Mental/Intellectual Abuse
- silent treatment
- threatening you and later claims he’s “just joking”
Financial Abuse
- making you account for all your spending
- spending money needed for the household on himself or gambling
- threatening to take all your money if you should separate
Spiritual Abuse
- attacking your beliefs
Social Abuse
- keeping you isolated
- controlling who you spend time with
Using Children
- putting you down in front of the children
- threatening to take children from you
